I have 12V input voltage, and I want to step it down to 5V. Is it a good idea to step it down to 8V using LM7808 then to 5V using LM7805 ? I am doing this in order to reduce heat.
The total amount of heat (power) generated is the same. So if you are in an enclosure, you’re dealing with the same amount of heat.
Usually one heat sink is smaller than two.
